Presenting works by Randall Thompson, his “Alleluia” arranged for string quartet, Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet in C minor Opus 18, no. 4, and Franz Schubert’s String Quartet in A minor “Rosamunde”. The Alleluia is originally a choral work of great beauty and serenity, and translates quite well to the string quartet genre. The C minor quartet of Beethoven, from his early period, is quite brooding. Moods swing from dark and swirling, to buoyant and almost comic. Finally the “Rosamunde” quartet, named for the material of the 2nd movement which was taken from incidental music Schubert penned for the now forgotten play of the same name. This work is characteristically vocal and deep in emotional content, and it comes from the same time as “Death and the Maiden” near the end of Schubert’s life.
From Portland Press Herald (Portland, Maine), June 15, 2022: “The quartet originally formed in 1991 in Philadelphia, but its members moved to Maine full time a few years later. Jordan and Liva are original members, and the group has had several different lineups over the years. The current foursome has been intact for more than a decade and has been playing concerts throughout the state and beyond to a dedicated following and offering educational opportunities as well.”
