Biographical Sketches of Loyalists of the American Revolution [2nd Edition] | Lorenzo Sabine
Book
A two volume one of a kind special leather bound second edition of Biographical Sketches of Loyalists of the American Revolution with An Historical Essay by American historian Lorenzo Sabine and published by Little, Brown and Company of Boston in 1864. The volumes are inscribed by Sabine to his daughters. The two volumes represent a significant expansion on Sabine’s earlier single volume first edition on the same subject published by Charles C. Little and James Brown of Boston in 1847. The first edition ran 733 pages, the second edition over 1,200 pages. Born in New Hampshire, Sabine moved to Boston, Massachusetts, with his parents in 1811 and to Hampden, Maine, in 1814. At the age of eighteen, he moved to Eastport, Maine. From early on, Sabine, was, in his words, "revolution-mad." But it wasn’t until he moved to the eastern coast of Maine with its border with the American Loyalist founded province of New Brunswick that he was able to pursue his research interests and have the necessary research resources readily available. Here he could engage in his belief that "there was more than one side to the Revolution." The attitude in the United States up to this was that every Loyalist must be bad and every Patriot must be good. When the first edition of his work on the Loyalists appeared in 1847, it created great controversy. Jared Sparks, the Harvard College historian, was one of the few people and scholars to commend the book. Sabine died in Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1877 and he is buried in Hillside Cemetery in Eastport.
