Photograph
A gelatin silver photographic print, “Staircase, Capen House, 16 Key Street, Eastport, Maine,” by photographer, Thaddeus Holownia, taken in 2015. The photograph was part of a large scale nine year effort by Holownia to photograph the architecture, landscape and community of Eastport, Maine from 2009 to 2017. Using large format cameras and film photography, Holownia took nearly 1,000 photographs of building exteriors and interiors, architectural details and wider streetscapes and landscapes of Eastport. Nearly 200 of the photographs were incorporated into the 218 page hardbound book, Eastport, with accompanying thematic essays by New Brunswick architect, John Leroux, co-published by Holownia’s Anchorage Press and the Tides Institute & Museum of Art (TIMA) in 2018. Holownia was born in England in 1949 and immigrated to Canada in 1954. For 41 years he taught photography at Mount Allison University in Sackville New Brunswick. Holownia’s exquisite large format photographs of the forests, rivers and architecture of Atlantic Canada and other selective part of the world have been exhibited and published extensively including a major retrospective exhibition of his work, The Nature of Nature, The Photographs of Thaddeus Holownia 1976–2016, at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Holownia is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and he received the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for High Achievement in the Visual Arts from artsNB as well as the Order of New Brunswick. The Eastport photograph was a gift to TIMA by the photographer.
