Dennysville: A New England Town Through Time | David Wolfe / Siri Beckman
Print
A letterpress printed poster, “Dennysville: A New England Town Through Time,” produced by the Tides Institute in 2011 in collaboration with letterpress printer and designer, David Wolfe, of Wolfe Editions of Portland, Maine. Two hundred and fifty copies of the 14” (width) x 19 5/8” (length) poster were printed as part of a limited edition. Printmaker, Siri Beckman, then of Stonington, Maine was commissioned by the Tides Institute to create a wood engraving of the town of Dennysville for the poster. The poster is part of a series of 24 place based, letterpress printed posters focusing on Washington County, Maine that were published between 2008 and 2018 by the Tides Institute in association with Wolfe. Subjects in the poster series range from place based initiatives to important architectural buildings to communities such as the “Dennysville” poster. In the late 18th century, Euro-American residents primarily from Hingham, Massachusetts moved to what is now Dennysville within what is traditional Passamaquoddy territory. They were led there by American Revolutionary War general, Benjamin Lincoln, and they were drawn there by cheap land and age old forests that they used for lumber and shipbuilding. Today, much of the town’s center is intact with a remarkable collection of late 18th and to mid-19th century historic buildings. They serve as a testament to early builders and tenacity of later generations with newer growth forest everywhere in view.
