Boston. A mid-19th century published sheet music score, “The Georgiana Waltzes,” composed and arranged for the piano forte by William C. Glynn. It dates to 1844 and was dedicated to Miss Maria Archibald Hobbs of Eastport, Maine. Maria Hobbs was born in 1821, the daughter of George and Salome Hobbs. The piano forte was an early small piano that was popular in homes at the time. The sheet music was published by Henry Prentiss of Boston and printed by Thayer and Company, lithographers, also of Boston. Whether Maria’s parents paid to have the music score composed in their daughter’s honor is unclear, but her parents were originally from the Boston area. The institute has another slightly earlier dedicated piece of published sheet music in its collections, “Le Victoria, A New Set of Quadrilles,” dating to 1835, composed by James Hooton of Boston and inscribed to Miss Margaret Strang of St. Andrews, New Brunswick. In 1847, three years after “The Georgiana Waltzes” was published, Maria Hobbs married Peter Asley Scott, a lieutenant in the British Royal Navy, who at the time was serving on the Columbia steamship that was engaged iin surveying the coast of North America under the command of Capt. William Fitzwilliam Owen of nearby Campobello Island in New Brunswick. They were married in the Washington Street Baptist Church in Eastport by the Reverend Kendall Brooks. She died in 1895. The Tides Institute acquired the “The Georgiana Waltzes” sheet music through ebay auction.
