Friar Head, Campobello, New Brunswick | Prosper Senat
Print
An etching of Friar’s Head on Campobello Island, New Brunswick by American artist, Prosper Louis Senat. It dates to 1886. Sent was born in Philadelphia in 1852 to a wealthy family. His early art training included studies at the National Academy of Design in New York at the Brooklyn Art Associaton. Later studies included the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and the South Kensington School in London. He married in 1887 and began to divide his time between Philadelphia in the winter and Kennebunkport, Maine in the summers. Much of his time was also spent travelling and painting to many parts of the world: Southern Italy, Egypt, Mexico, Jamaica, Bermuda, Belgium, England, France, Holland, Nova Scotia, and the coastlines of Cornwall and Brittany. He also did a number of etchings including at least four (all in the collections of the Tides Institute) in the Passamaquoddy Bay region. Senat exhibited widely throughout his life and belonged to a number of artist clubs, both in Philadelphia and New York City. He died in 1925. The description accompanying Senat’s etching of Frair’s Head is as follows: “Friar Head, Campobello, N.B. Campobello, like its larger companion, Grand Menan, just escaped being an American subject. It has become well known in late years, however, to most Americans, as a very delightful summer resort, with the additional attraction that its scenery is yet sufficiently new to give it the charm once (though no longer, with all its beauty) attached to Mt. Desert. Friar Head is a prominent landmark of Passamaquoddy Bay, and the most imposing headland on the island.”
