Nude in Hammock | Steven Trefonides

A large scale charcoal drawing by artist Steven Trefonides titled “Nude in a Hammock.” The drawing was a gift to the Tides Institute by the artist in 2016 and is the first large work that Trefonides did after he began to visit Lubec, Maine in the 1960s. Trefonides is a well known Boston artist who was part of a significant group artists from this city who visited Lubec for many years and particularly during the 1950s and 1960s. Artist, Nina Bohlen, whose family had deep ties to Lubec and had houses and land there, led the Boston artists to this downeast coastal town. In addition to Trefonides and Bohlen, other Boston based artist who were part of the annual artist migration to Lubec included Hyman Bloom, Paul Caponigro, Nicholas Dean and Marie Cosindas, Harold Tovish, Kahlil George Gibran, Marianna Pineda and Iso Papo. Trefonides and his wife, Phyllis, bought a house in Lubec and summered in Lubec for more than 50 years, until very recently. Trefonides was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1926. He studied at the Swain School of Design in New Bedford, the Vesper George School of Art in Boston, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston where he majored in painting from 1950 to 1954. The recipient of Tiffany and Fulbright grants, Trefonides' work may be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the de Cordova Museum and the Wadsworth Athenaeum. The Tides Institute mounted a retrospective exhibition of Trefonides’ work, with accompanying catalogue, in 2016.
