Professor and Historian, Jeffers Lennox, Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut. 1776 and After: Watertown, Independence, and Loyalism in the Wabanaki Homelands. In July 1776, two documents outlined possible futures for the Wabanaki and the Patriots, the Declaration of Independence and the Treaty of Watertown. Many Wabanaki had to navigate the war and its aftermath as nations who never surrendered their sovereignty but who were ultimately excluded from the project of American Independence. • August 6, 7 pm. MEETING HOUSE TALK, Central Meeting House, 26 Middle Street, Eastport, Maine. In this richly illustrated talk, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist Victoria Johnson shares the dramatic and consequential life of the artist Frederic Church, whose footsteps she followed around the globe for her “superb” (Wall Street Journal) new biography of Church, Glorious Country. Church had a deep and abiding connection to the Maine coast and its inland woods and waters, including Mount Katahdin and Mount Desert Island as well as the Eastport area and neighboring New Brunswick’s Grand Manan Island. The talk will be followed by a book signing. Presented in Church’s bicentennial year.
• August 8, 7 pm: NORTH CHURCH PERFORMANCE. Parker String Quartet. North Church Project Space, 82 High Street, Eastport, Maine. The Parker Quartet is currently Blodgett Artists-in-Residence at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. • August 29, 4 pm: DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE CLOSING REMARKS & TALK. Closing remarks by Steve Bromage, Director, Maine Historical Society and Donald Soctomah, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer, Passamaquoddy Tribe followed by talk by professor and historian Liam Riordan, University of Maine on he Dunlap Broadside. Remarks and talk to take place at Bank Square, Eastport, Maine in front of Tides Institute’s main building located at 43 Water Street in Eastport.
