N AN EFFORT to demonstrate the value and
possibilities of better water based transportation around Passamaquoddy Bay, to
strengthen the links between the communities of Passamaquoddy Bay, and to benefit
the Institute's Passamaquoddy Fund for Art and Culture, the Tides Institute
launched an annual Quoddy Sail in 2003. That year, forty passengers embarked from
Eastport, Maine on Monday, August 25th, aboard the Eastport based 74 foot
schooner, Sylvina Beal, for a day long trip to St. Andrews, New Brunswick. Last
year, torrential rains the day before gave way to a perfect sunny summer day on
Sunday, August 22nd and allowed the second annual Quoddy Sail '04, to take place
as scheduled. Thirty-three passengers went by water aboard the St. Andrews based
72 foot gaff rigged square rigged cutter, Cory, from Eastport to St. Andrews to
spend the day. Most toured the William Van Horne estate on Ministers Island and
the Ross Memorial Museum before setting forth to explore St. Andrews on their
own. Quoddy Sail '05 had to be cancelled due to continuing problems in overcoming Homeland security issues.
We are planning to schedule a Quoddy Sail '06. If you have interest in participating in this summer's
sail, you may contact us by using this link: Contact Us.
