THE TIDES INSTITUTE & MUSEUM OF ART recently purchased the nearby Holmes Building, a two unit, two story brick structure built in 1887 and designed by architect, Henry N. Black, the same architect who designed the Tides Institue building. This building will be redeveloped into the Tides Institute • StudioWorks space including production space for letterpress, printmaking and digital operations; workshop space; and housing space for visiting artists in residence. The property includes an adjacent parking lot for six vehicles. The Tides Institute has also developed its own imprint, the Hand Line Press, in conjunction with these facilties. Hand Line Press involves the production of a series of letterpress posters and other printed materials. Basic production equipment includes a Vandercook Number 4 proofing press, a M.M. Kelton etching press, a Ettan MS-12 tabletop etching press, a 6x9 Sigwalt tabletop letterpress, a Line-O-Scribe tabletop letterpress, a Nolan tabletop proof press, a 34 inch Toulmin board shear, and considerable quantity of wood and metal type. Other equipment includes an Epson Expression 10000XL Photo scanner, a 21.5" iMac with 3.2 GHz processor, and an Epson Sylus Pro 3880 printer. Additional and upgraded equipment will be added over the coming year.
