Martin & Caraher
Below follows a listing of tape recordings held by the
Tides Institute.

All of her family came from
Walton, Nova Scotia to Eastport, Maine in 1884, the year Alice was born in
Eastport. All of her family, except her mother, along with her cousin worked in
the Martin and Caraher sardine factory. Alice began work in the factory at age 10
and worked as a cutter, flaker, and packer. Her sisters worked at the same jobs.
Her brother at one time distributed flakes to packers. Her father was boss of the
cutting shed as well as night watchman. He also worked in the press room. Her
cousin worked as baker with the reel oven in the flaking room. Her family lived
in a house next to the Martin and Caraher factory that they rented from William
Martin. Her family always boarded someone during the sardine season, usually
someone from Deer Island or Campobello Island, New Brunswick. Recordings: April

Waldo was born and grew up in
Machiasport, Maine. During ages 11-13, Waldo's family spent three consecutive
summers living at North Lubec, Maine at Passamaquoddy Bay. There Waldo worked
along with his father and brother in the Coggins and Small sardine factory. Waldo
worked as a cutter, flaker, and seamer. His father worked for awhile at least in
the "bath" room. A Deer Island, New Brunswick crew operated a sailing sardine
carrier that supplied the factory with herring. Recordings: January 19, 1980; May

Asa was born and grew up on Campobello
Island, New Brunswick. He well remembered New Brunswickers going to work in the
sardine factories of Eastport and Lubec, Maine. As a teen-ager he piloted saill
powered sardine carriers. Recordings: August 4, 1983; August 17, 1983.

For about six years of
his growing up, William and his family lived on Campobello Island, New Brunswick.
He worked in the Blanchard sardine factory in Eastport in the 1890s. Very
occasionally during this period, he would work at the Martin and Caraher factory.
William worked as a cutter, flaker, and seamer. Recordings: July 1, 1981; July 6,

1890s, early 1900s helping his family and cutting fish in what was the Capen
