1981.
The Martin & Caraher Sardine Factory operated at Little's
Cove in Eastport from 1879 to 1898. Extensive oral history tape recorded
interviews with men and women who worked in this and other sardine factories in
the 1890s along with exhaustive photographic research have allowed for a detailed
look at the life and work of this factory during a period before heavy
mechanization of the factories began. Work is continuing to develop a full
fledged history of this factory operation including a scale model of the factory.
Many of the interviews are listed under the Oral History page: oral histories.
