Twenty-nine photographs taken by Lewis Hine of child labor within the sardine industry of Eastport and
Lubec, Maine in 1911. The photographs were part of efforts by the National Child Labor Commission to examine
the working conditions of children within industrial America. Lewis Hine's photographs for the Commission
are from the collection housed at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. In 1999, the Quoddy Maritime
Museum of Eastport, Maine sponsored an exhibit of Lewis Hine's sardine industry photographs in Eastport.
