EAST MACHIAS HISTORIC DISTRICT

The East Machias Historic District was nominated to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 (by the Maine Historic Preservation Commission). Edwin C. Randall, the local history researcher, used Whittiers History of East Machias, and Driskos Narrative of the Town of Machias. It includes buildings on High Street, Water Street and Bridge Street.

There are 24 houses as well as the Pope Memorial Bridge, the Congregational Church (1836) (pictured), Burrills Store (on the site of former Colonel Benjamin Foster House), the Congregational Church Vestry (once shared by Machias Valley Head Start and School Administrative District 77s pre-school) and the Church of the Disciples of Christ (1880), now used by Washington Academys Albee-Richardson Building (pictured). In addition there are four historic sites -- of the S.W. Pope & Co. Grist Mill (1788) built by Captain Peter Talbot, the James Foster Grist Mill (1818), S.W. Pope & Co. SawMill (1840-1906), and the SawMill & GristMill of the J.M. Wiswell & Co. The first saw mill in East Machias was built in 1765 by Sylvanus Scott, his brother Samuel Scott, Colonel Benjamin Foster, Woodin Foster, Daniel Fogg, and others. ECR, JCB
