EASTPORT HISTORIC DISTRICT

Frank A. Beard, M.H.P.C. (1982) wrote, "The Eastport Historic District is a homogeneous and cohesive grouping of 29 architecturally and/or historically significant buildings. Nearly all were built within a year or two after a disastrous fire wiped out the entire waterfront and commercial area in 1886." Those pictured are (1) U.S. Customs House and Post Office, (9) Central Congregational Church, (17) Fleet Bank, (18) Peavey Memorial Library, (19) Bangor Savings Bank. F AB

DOWNTOWN EASTPORT, MAINE

In October, 1886, a fire started in one of the sardine factories on the waterfront, and spread through town. It consumed almost every building on the waterfront. Construction resumed the next spring, and a large majority of Water Street buildings were completed in 1887-1888. Mr. Black was responsible for the design of the downtown buildings. The entire downtown has been designated historic and placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Of special interest should be S.L. Wadsworth Hardware owned and operated by seven generations of Wadsworths. Frontier Bank, now Fleet Bank, was built in 1882. It was one of the few buildings to escape the fire of 1886. AFN, JP
