October 28, 2003: Twenty-nine photographs taken by Lewis Hine of child labor within the sardine industry of Eastport and Lubec, Maine in 1911. The photographs were part of efforts by the National Child Labor Commission to examine the working conditions of children within industrial America. Lewis Hine's photographs for the Commission are from the collection housed at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. In 1999, the Quoddy Maritime Museum of Eastport, Maine sponsored an exhibit of Lewis Hine's sardine industry photographs in Eastport. To go to the "Exhibition" category, click here: Exhibition. October 28, 2003: Annual Quoddy Sail. On August 25, 2003 the Tides Institute organized and sponsored the first of what will become an annual all day sail between the communities surrounding Passamaquoddy Bay. The purpose of the annual sail is to strengthen links between these communities and to demonstrate the value and possibilities of water based transportation. Quoddy Sail '03 saw 40 passengers sail aboard the schooner, Sylvina Beal, from Eastport, Maine to St. Andrews, New Brunswick for the day. November 17, 2002: A new category, "Exhibition," is launched with forty photographs of the former McCurdy's herring smokehouse of Lubec, Maine by photographer, Frank Van Riper. All images copyright © Frank Van Riper. All rights reserved. Van Riper divides his time between Washington, D.C. and Lubec, Maine. A former Nieman Fellow at Harvard, Van Riper writes a column on photography for the Washington Post. His columns were recently collected into a book entitled, Talking Photography: Viewpoints on the Art, Craft and Business (2002). He is also the author of Down East Maine: A World Apart (1998) with text and photographs by him about Washington County, Maine. Over time, "Exhibition" will feature both online exhibits and physical exhibits at the Tides Institute's headquarters. September 12, 2002: The Tides Institute enters into an agreement to purchase Victor DeGrailly's oil painting, "Eastport and Passamaquoddy" (c.1840s) - the single most important painting relating to Passsamaquoddy Bay. Composed of eight initial members from Canada and the United States, the Tides Institute has established a North Atlantic Cultural Council to advise the Institute on a broad range of issues and projects. The Tides Institute has established a Quoddy Regional History Board, made up of 12 individuals from throughout the Quoddy area, to advise the institute on Quoddy historical matters and to foster cooperative regionwide historical initiatives.
