Building on the success of workshops by Sue Clifford of Common Ground, UK, offered regionally during summer 2009 and presented by the Tides Institute, a group is forming to plan the undertaking of a Parish Map for Eastport. Click here to view Parish Map poster detailing Sue Clifford's 2009 visit.
What is a Parish Map? A Parish Map is a visual depiction of what a community values most about itself— its history, character, traditions, institutions, culture, daily life, natural resources, work and play — all the things that make a particular city, town or village unique. A Parish Map is created by a community (or parish in the UK) to demonstrate what people value in it—wild life, history, livelihood/work, landmarks, buildings, people, festivals and more. A map may take many forms and does not need to be cartographically correct, but illustrates locally distinctive activities and features—a focus on the everyday things that make a place significant and different from the next. The emphasis of the Parish Maps Project is to bring awareness to what is valued in a locality, recognizing features that combine to make it different and distinct from another place. This project serves to re-establish and increase community pride through recognition of the everyday. Click here to view Fernhurst Parish Map from England
Why is it a ‘parish’ map? Parish is an English term used to denote the common area of civic governance. The use of the word is suggested as a broad term and can include neighborhoods, town or city boundaries, or overlapping regions. It doesn’t necessarily refer to the area around a church and the map is not necessarily a guide to navigation.
Who decides what goes on the Parish Map of a community? You do—the people who live there and want to participate. You can identify what your place has to offer, what aspects of it need more attention, and what makes it different from the next. You can express its particular identity and encourage local distinctiveness! Watch for announcements of upcoming Eastport Parish Map meetings later in the season.
Where can I learn more? Copies of the book, A Sense of Place: West Sussex Parish Maps by Kim Leslie containing more than 75 color plates of maps created by communities located in West Sussex, England, are available book at the Peavey Library and Tides Institute. The book is a good introduction to the variety of forms a Parish Map can take and how communities have chosen to express about themselves.
